Rio de Janeiro - The Brazilian Navy has set up a field hospital in the hardest hit area of the mountainous region above the city of Rio de Janeiro ("região serrana do Rio"); that is, the city of Nova Friburgo, where the death toll from flooding and mudslides is now close to 300.
According to spokespersons, even before the hospital was fully operational (Friday afternoon, January 14), patients were getting medical attention. By Saturday, over 480 people had been seen by doctors. The hospital is now operating 24 hours a day.
