Rio de Janeiro - With assistance from the federal government, the state of Rio de Janeiro has moved heavy machinery into the disaster area in the mountains of the state of Rio de Janeiro ("região serrano"). Some 400 vehicles of various types - from bulldozers and tractors, to ambulances, trucks and even some 30 helicopters - are now working in the cities in the mountainous region most affected by the recent heavy rain, floods and mudslides. They are removing mud and debris from streets and avenues that will have to be rebuilt, as well as transporting victims. At least 74 fire trucks are in the area, along with almost 50 police cars.
